Some artists wear their influences on their sleeve. But the musician Karl Wallinger, who recorded as World Party, wore his influences proudly and prominently across his chest. Woven into his soulful, psychedelic songs are outright quotations from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and The Who along with subtle tributes to Motown, Memphis Soul, Brian Wilson and many others. But somehow Wallinger synthesized those familiar threads into something honest, original and powerfully human. Born in Wales, Wallinger first came to prominence as a member of The Waterboys. He battled illnesses in the last decade of his life and died too soon in 2024 at just 66 years of age. Karl Wallinger: a mortal man. An immortal artist.
