To the discriminating music lover of the time, it might have seemed like Angela Bofill was born in 1978 when she emerged as a full-blown vocal virtuoso with the release of her first album, “Angie.” But by then at age 24, she had already studied at the Hartford Conservatory, graduated from Hunter College High School and the Manhattan School of Music, worked with the Dance Theater of Harlem and served time in the band of Latin superstar Richie Marrero. Following that debut, Angela would produce six albums of exceptional songs that landed in the Top 40 R&B Charts with five of them crossing over to the Pop Chart’s top 100. She was acclaimed for her rich and textured vocal tone and three and a half octave range and for phrasing that bridged the worlds of jazz and R&B. Sadly, her career was cut short by debilitating strokes in the early two thousands, and she sadly left us in June 2024. But if there’s a choir of angels where she is now, you can be sure Angela Bofill is on a cloud of her own.
