When it comes to sidemen, David Lindley was always way out in front. A multi-instrumentalist who could play anything with strings from an Apache Fiddle to a Zither, Lindley was the accompanist of choice for the top tier artists of LA in the 70s and beyond. From Jackson Browne to Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton to Warren Zevon, Lindley became especially renowned for his dazzling lap steel guitar work which can be heard on records by Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Curtis Mayfield and Bruce Springsteen among dozens of others. Offstage, he was a quiet family man, but on tour with Jackson Browne his soaring slide work, along with his fiddle, left as indelible an impression as the polyester Hawaiian shirts that were his visual signature. David Lindley left us in March of 2023 after suffering from Long Covid. But he left his impression in thousands of vinyl grooves and deep in the hearts of a million music lovers.
