Victor Bailey, Michael and Randy Brecker, Eric Clapton, Billy Cobham, George Duke, Bill Evans, Roberta Flack, Bob James, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, and Joe Zawinul. Sounds like an encyclopedia of contemporary jazz geniuses, and perhaps it is. But it’s also a short list of the musicians who considered themselves fortunate to have played with guitar hero Dean Brown. On his five solo albums and on more than a hundred others – including four Grammy winners – Dean demonstrated a chameleon’s ability to adapt his touch and tone to everything from 12-bar blues to freestyle jazz, funk and Latin fusion. Though he was just 68 when cancer took him in January of 2024, he left us more than a lifetime’s worth of licks.
