Duffy Jackson was the son of jazz double-bassist and band leader Chubby Jackson. As a child, he played drums, making appearances with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and Buddy Rich before he finished high school. In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked with Monty Alexander, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Lena Horne, Milt Jackson and Barney Kessel. He also appeared on television for two years with Sammy Davis, Jr. In the 1980s Jackson shared the stage with Lionel Hampton, Al Jarreau, James Moody, Thad Jones and Sonny Stitt. Eventually, he re-joined the Count Basie Orchestra under Frank Foster. In the 1990s, after relocating to Florida, Jackson played with Harry Allen and The Manhattan Transfer. Over the years, he played with so many jazz icons before moving to Nashville in the late 2000s to front his own big band. Duffy Jackson died aged 67 on March 3, 2021.
