In 1972, a young elementary school teacher in El Paso packed his guitar case to make a fresh start in Greenwich Village as a folk troubadour like so many others at that time. But unlike most others, Hugh Prestwood would have the talent and good fortune to make a friend of singer Judy Collins, who would record his song “Hard Time For Lovers”. That moment launched a songwriting career that would span four decades and produce dozens of heartfelt and world-wise tracks for artists from Crystal Gayle to Tricia Yearwood, from Alison Krauss to Jimmy Buffet, and from Jerry Douglas to James Taylor. Although Nashville was where he made his mark, Prestwood made his home in New York State, where he taught Advanced Songwriting at the New School in Manhattan for most of his life. In October of 2024, Hugh Prestwood succumbed to a stroke and his legacy was cut short. But to quote one of his best-loved lyrics, “Yeah, even if the whole world has forgotten, the song remembers when.”
