The first Savoy Brown record was released in 1967. The last in 2020. And in the 53 years in between, English guitarist and bandleader Kim Simmonds never varied his commitment to the Blues. Though ultimately less famous than his British peers Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, Simmonds shared with them a deep appreciation for American Blues legends like Muddy Waters and Memphis Slim. But unlike his fellow axe men who ventured into rock, jazz and pop, Simmonds maintained that singular blue streak throughout his career, leading multiple versions of Savoy Brown with his resonant slide guitar technique and fundamental songwriting chops. The guitar was his lifeline and even as he battled cancer, he kept on until he no longer could. Kim Simmonds lost his battle with cancer in December 2022. But he won a place in the blues pantheon alongside his heroes.
