The story of Kris Kristofferson’s life is something between a fairy tale and an after-school special. The son of an Air Force Major General, he excelled in all sports, earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford with the intention of becoming a poet and novelist, trained as a helicopter pilot in the Army where he earned the rank of captain—then walked away to start a music career in Nashville. In 1965 he was working as a janitor at Columbia Studios when Johnny Cash and his wife June pulled him onstage at the Newport Folk Festival. The rest his music history. As a songwriter and performer, he’d go on to earn recognition in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the national Academy of Songwriters and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. As an actor, he appeared in more than fifty films, earning a Golden Globe for his part in A Star is Born with Barbra Streisand. His songs, most famously “Sunday Morning Comin’ Down” and “Me and Bobby McGee” continue to be covered by artists from across the musical spectrum. And while his earthly life ended last September, his life story will live happily ever after.
