When an eagle flies, it might be the flash of feathers that catches your eye, but it’s the mighty muscle underneath that keeps it aloft. For the musical Eagles, that muscle was provided by Randy Meisner. As a founding member of the band at the forefront of the Southern California scene, Meisner laid down the bass lines that became the foundation of every ‘70s soundtrack along with the vocal harmonies that still float from car windows every summer night. Known as much for his honeyed high vocal range as for his tasteful touch on the bass, Meisner co-wrote and sang the show-stopping ballad “Take It To The Limit” before he left the band in 1975. As a solo artist, he never fully recaptured the spotlight and his mental and physical health deteriorated in later years, but as long as cars have radios, we’ll never stop singing along with Randy Meisner.
