You could be forgiven for wondering if there was a major musical moment in the past sixty years when Robbie Robertson wasn’t in the room. As the lead songwriter and guitarist for a band so accomplished it didn’t need a name, he prided himself on creating songs that could have been written a century before – or after – his time. Robertson’s work with The Band was instrumental in creating the entire Americana music genre. He wrote “The “Weight”, “Up on Cripple Creek”, and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and had solo hits of his own as well. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as a member of The Band. Though born in Canada, he managed to play an essential role in the careers of such American icons as Bob Dylan, Neal Diamond, Joan Baez and Martin Scorsese. After the Band’s demise, Robertson launched a successful solo career and engaged with his legacy as a Native American – his mother was descended from Mohawk and Cayuga tribes. Robbie Robertson. A man before his time who will be remembered long after it.
