“He was a horrible guitar player.” So said Rocco Prestia’s closest friend and bandmate, Emilio Castillo. After a music teacher persuaded Prestia to switch to bass, he and Castillo would go on to form the jazz-funk juggernaut known as Tower of Power, and the rest is music history. Though best remembered for their airtight horn section, it was the deep finger style funk at the bottom of the beat that made the T.O.P. engines roar on songs like “What is Hip?” which hit the charts in 1973. Inspired by funk bass masters like Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins, Prestia would in turn inspire a whole new generation of assertive bassists like Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius. Just 69 when he left us, Rocco Prestia will long be remembered as the power behind the tower.
